Abstract

This thesis addresses the implicit relation of non-causality between the Chinese rise and a suggested American decline. The present thesis sought to analyze the Chinese rise against the argument of simultaneous American decline, having as theoretical support the contribution of structural power and the framework of the International Political Economy regarding the concept of power. For this, a bibliographical review was carried out to better observe the development of both countries and, consequently, to investigate if there is a causal relationship between the dynamics. To fulfill this objective, the present thesis is composed of three chapters, divided into theoretical support, analysis of the Chinese rise, and then debate on American decline. For the purposes of structuring the research, the time interval between the 1970s and the year 2013 was delimited as a temporal cut. The first date is justified due to the important measures and results of development in China and because it is a period of restructuring of American power.
